Bambu Indah - Bali

Living Lightly: Bamboo Innovation at Ubud’s Bambu Indah

Ins and outs: Bambu Indah is a secluded eco-retreat tucked into the lush jungle just outside Ubud. The property blends antique Javanese teak homes with innovative bamboo structures, creating an off-grid experience that merges traditional design with a deep respect for nature. Its grounds include natural spring-fed pools, winding pathways through edible gardens, and a front-row view of the Ayung River valley.

Location: set in the Sayan region of Bali, Bambu Indah feels worlds away but is only a short drive from Ubud. Perched above the Ayung River and surrounded by rice paddies and forest, it offers direct access to nature while remaining close to one of Bali’s cultural hubs. Raised bamboo walkways connect the various houses and common spaces.

Rooms: each of the 23 houses is unique—some are original bridal homes transported from Java, others are entirely bamboo-built dreamscapes. Think four-poster beds, outdoor copper bathtubs, and panoramic jungle views. The Moon House and Copper House offer standout otherworldly designs, while riverside lodgings bring you closer to the wild side of the island.

Food and Drinks: you can dine at two on-site restaurants: Tembaga, which offers an anti-inflammatory menu of organic, locally sourced dishes served in a breezy bamboo structure; and Riverside Warung, where Indonesian classics are prepared over open flame and served beside the river. Much of the produce comes directly from the gardens or local farms.

Care: Bambu Indah is built on the principles of sustainable living. From using reclaimed materials to natural pools and compost systems, every detail is designed to minimize environmental impact and maximize connection to the land. Daily practices like barefoot walking, traditional bathing rituals, and slow food reinforce a lifestyle that’s as grounding as it is inspiring.

Unseen
: one of Bambu Indah’s most magical features is its bamboo elevator—a hand-powered lift that descends through the forest canopy, offering a slow-motion journey down to the riverside. Whether you’re floating in the natural pool carved into volcanic rock, swinging out over the valley on a jungle rope, or soaking in a copper tub under the stars, the retreat is full of quiet wonders
